    @@@@@

    Wherever I may roam,
On land or sea or foam,
You can always hear me singing this song,
Show me the way to go home

It was almost dark, and in the lee of the truck underneath the coconut trees it was becoming difficult to see the men's facesToglio's mood deepened, became sad and gentleHe remembered how his wife had looked once trimming a Christmas tree, and a tear ran down his heavy fleshy cheeksFor a minute or so he felt completely removed from the war, from the rain, from everything; he knew that in a little while he would be having to consider where and how he would sleep, but for this brief moment he sang resolutely, wriggling his toes, letting all the soft sensuous memories that the songs evoked flow unresisting through his mind
A jeep came wallowing through the mud and came to a halt about thirty feet from themHe saw General Cummings and two other officers dismount, and he nudged Red to stop singingThe General was bareheaded and his uniform was completely wet, but he was smilingToglio looked at him with interest and some reverenceHe had seen the General many times in the bivouac area but this was the first time he had been so close"You men, you men here," the General shouted as he came near them, "how do you feelwet?" Toglio laughed with the othersGeneral Cummings grinned"It's all right," he shouted, "you're not made of sugar The wind ebbed, and in a more normal tone he said to a major and lieutenant who were with him, "I do believe the rain's about to haltI just telephoned Washington, and the War Department assured me it was bound to stop The two officers laughed vigorously, and Toglio found himself smilingThe General was a swell guy, a perfect example of an officer
"Now, men," the General said loudly, "I don't believe there's a tent that's still up in the areaAs soon as the storm lifts, we'll try to bring up some ponchos from the beach, but I have no doubt some of you are going to be wet tonightIt's to be regretted, but you've been wet beforeA bit of trouble has started up on the line, and some of you may spend the night in a far worse place He paused for a moment, standing in the rain; then he added with a twinkle, "I assume that none of you left a guard post when the storm brokeIf any of you are here who shouldn't be, you better get the hell back as soon as I leave There was a snicker from the

off as soon as possibleWhen Mansfield was considered, time was
    390
    Mansfield Park
precious; and the state of his own mind made him find relief only in
motionIt was settled that he should order the carriage to the door
in half an hourFanny answered for their having breakfasted and
being quite ready in half an hourHe had already ate, and declined
staying for their mealHe would walk round the ramparts, and join
them with the carriageHe was gone again; glad to get away even
    from Fanny
He looked very ill; evidently suffering under violent emotions,
which he was determined to suppressShe knew it must be so, but it
    was terrible to her
The carriage came; and he entered the house again at the gold gucci same
moment, just in time to spend a few minutes with the family, and
be a witness—but that he saw nothing—of the tranquil manner in
which the daughters were parted with, and just in time to prevent
their sitting down to the breakfast-table, which, by dint of much
unusual activity, was quite and completely ready as the carriage drove
from the doorFanny’s last meal in her father’s house was in character
with her first: she was dismissed from it as hospitably as she had
    been welcomed
How her heart swelled with joy and gratitude as she passed the
barriers of Portsmouth, and how Susan’s face wore its broadest smiles,
may be easily conceivedSitting forwards, however, and screened by

The journey was likely chanel classic bag to be a silent oneEdmund’s deep sighs
often reached FannyHad he been alone with her, his heart must
have opened in spite of every resolution; but Susan’s presence drove
him quite into himself, and his attempts to talk on indifferent subjects
    could never be long supported
Fanny watched him with never-failing solicitude, and sometimes
catching his eye, revived an affectionate smile, which comforted
her; but the first day’s journey passed without her hearing a word
from him on the subjects that were weighing him downThe next
morning produced a little moreJust before their setting out from
Oxford, while Susan was stationed at a window, in eager observation

sufferHow a man who had once loved, could desert you! But yours—
your regard was new compared with——Fanny, think of me!”
The first division of their journey occupied a long day, and brought
them, almost knocked up, to Oxford; but the second was over at a
much earlier hourThey were in the environs of Mansfield long
before the usual dinner-time, and as they approached the beloved

the point of being called into actionVisions of good and ill breeding,
of old vulgarisms and new gentilities, were before her; and she
was meditating much upon silver forks, napkins, and finger-glasses
Fanny had been everywhere awake to the difference of the country

They moved very slowly, keeping close to the tall grassMartinez would advance only thirty yards at a time, and then halt, before moving forward againSomething of his caution was transferred to the menWithout anything being said, they all were waryThey roused themselves from their fatigue, alerted their dulled senses, even restored to some extent a necessary delicate control of their limbsThey were careful where they placed their feet, and they lifted their legs at each step, and set them down firmly, trying to make no noiseThey were all acutely conscious of the silence in the valley, and started at unexpected rustles, halted every time an insect began its chirpingTheir tension increasedThey expected something to happen, and their mouths became dry, their heartbeats pounded high in their chests
It was only a few hundred yards from the place where Croft had studied the valley to the approaches of the pass, but the route Martinez took was more than half a mileIt took them a long time to circle around, perhaps half an hour, and their alertness diminishedThe men in the rear of the column had to wait minutes at a time, and then jog forward on the half-run to keep up with the rest of the platoonIt was trying, it was exhausting, and it grated on themTheir fatigue became alive again, and throbbed in their backs, in the exhausted hamstrings of their thighsThey would stand in a partial crouch, waiting for the signal to move ahead, their packs resting cruelly on their shouldersThe sweat would run into their eyes, and their eyes would tearThey lost the fine edge of their tension, became surlyA few of them began to grumble, and in one of the longer halts Wilson stopped to relieve himselfThey began to move while he was still occupied and the column was confusedThe men in the rear whispered up the file to halt the leaders, and for a minute or so men were moving back and forth and whispering to each otherWhen Wilson was ready, they advanced again, but discipline was brokenAlthough none of the men talked aloud, the sum of their whispers, their decreased caution in walking, added up to a detectable murmur of soundOccasionally Croft would give a hand signal to be silent, but it did not have enough effec

    @@@@@
The descent had been gradualThe ground below was flat and summer-green with fields of wild
grass bordering the approach to the massive brown building that was the Kubinka ArmoryIt
seemed to rise out of the earth, a huge boxlike intrusion on the pastoral scene, an ugly man-made
interruption of heavy brown wood and miserly windows reaching three stories high and covering
two acres of landLike the structure itself, the front entrance was large, square and unadorned
except for the dull bas-relief profiles above the door of three Soviet soldiers rushing into the deadly
winds of battle, their rifles at port arms, about to blow one another’s heads off
Armed with an authentic Russian AK-47 and five standard thirty-round magazine clips, Bourne
jumped out the far side of the silent coasting government car, using the bulk of the rolling vehicle
to conceal himself in the grass directly across the road from the entranceThe armory’s huge dirt
parking area was to the right of the long building; a single row of unkempt shrubbery fronted the
entrance lawn, in the center of which stood a tall white pole, the Soviet flag hanging limp in the
breezeless morning airJason ran across the road, his body low, and crouched by the hedgerow; he
had only moments to peer through the bushes and ascertain the existence or nonexistence of the
armory’s security proceduresAt best, they appeared lax to the point of being informal, if not
irrelevantThere was a glass window in the right wall of the entrance similar to that of a theater’s
box office; behind it sat a uniformed guard reading a magazine, and alongside him, less visible but
seen clearly enough, was another, his head on the counter, asleepTwo other soldiers emerged from
the immense armory door—double doors—both casual, unconcerned, as one glanced at his watch
and the other lighted a cigarette
So much for Kubinka’s security; no sudden assault was anticipated nor had one taken place, at
least none that had set off alarms reaching the front patrols, usually the first to be alertedIt was
eerie, unnatural, beyond the unexpectedThe Jackal was inside this military installation, yet there
was no sign that he had penetrated it, no indication that somewhere within the complex he was
controlling a minimum of five personnel—a man impersonating him, three other men and a
    woman
The parking area itself? He had not understood the exchanges between Alex, Krupkin and the
voice over the radio, but now it was clear to him that when they had spoken of people coming
outside and running to the stolen car, they were not referring to the front entrance! There had to be
an exit on the parking area! Christ, he had only seconds before the driver of the Komitet car started
up the engine and roared into the huge dirt lot, circling it and racing out, both actions announcing
the government vehicle’s arrival and swift, calamitous departureIf Carlos was going to make his
break, it would be then! After waiting for the standard radio backup, every moment of distance he
put between himself and the armory would make it more difficult to pick up his trailAnd he, the
efficient killing machine from Medusa, was in the wrong place! Further, the sight of a civilian
running across a lawn or down a road carrying an automatic weapon within a military compound
was to invite disasterIt was a small, stupid omission! Three or four additional words translated and
a less arrogant, more probing listener would have avoided the errorIt was always the little things,
the seemingly insignificant that crippled gray to black operationsGoddamn it!
Five hundred feet away the KGB sedan suddenly thundered as it swerved into the dirt parking
area raising clouds of dry dust while crushing and spitting out pieces of rock from its spinning tires
Robert Ludlum ?? THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM
    401
There was no time to think, time only to actBourne held the AK-47 against his right leg,
concealing it as much as possible as he rose to his feet, his left hand skimming the top of the low
hedgerow—a gardener, perhaps, surveying an anticipated assignment, or an indolent stroller
aimlessly touching the roadside shrubbery, nothing remotely threatening, just a sign of the
commonplace; to the casual observer, he might have been walking down that road for several
    minutes without being noticed
He glanced over at the armory’s entranceThe two soldiers were laughing quietly, the one
without a cigarette again looking at his watchThen the object of their minor conspiracy came out
of the left front door, an attractive dark-haired girl, barely in her twentiesShe humorously clapped
both her hands over her ears, made a grotesque face and walked rapidly to the time-conscious man
in uniform, kissing him on the li
